University Town Center Art - Document Garden Complete

In another step toward the build-out of University Town Center, Document Garden is now complete. Document Garden, open to the public, was designed by renowned artist Phillip Ratner, whose works can be seen at the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Supreme Court. Its signature piece, “Images of America,” consists of four sculpted metal units, each 12 feet high and five feet wide, displaying images of personalities, events, and concepts that portray different aspects of American history. Document Garden also features replicas of 18 documents representing key aspects of the founding and growth of the United States. University Town Center is working closely with the Prince George’s Arts Council to encourage school, youth, and civic groups to visit Document Garden, and to utilize it as an educational tool.

Ratner also created eight larger-than-life terrapin sculptures for installation throughout University Town Center. The first six of these terrapins are now installed in the lobby of Metro 3 at 6525 Belcrest Road in Hyattsville. They were painted creatively by art students from Hyattsville Middle School, Northwestern High School, and Prince George’s Community College.

University Town Center is a 1.4 million square foot office complex located just a block from Metro, with direct Green Line connection to downtown Washington. It is minutes from the Capital Beltway, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and the New Carrollton Amtrak station. On-site amenities include a day care center, post office, police substation, restaurants, newsstand and health club. Major tenants include the National Center for Health Statistics; a Prince George’s Community College satellite campus; Kaiser Permanente; the University of Maryland University College; Washington Hospital Center; and other federal, state, and county government offices. University Town Center is approved for over one million square feet of additional office space, up to 300,000 square feet of retail space including a movie theater, up to 2,600 residential apartment units, hotels and structured parking garages.
